Kashmir, is a land of fabled beauty and eternal romance, blessed by nature with breath-taking scenery and a glorious climate. The Kashmir valley, a fertile well watered spot, surrounded by high mountains has been described with justification as a "heaven on earth", a produce rich oasis an area not noted for its abundance.
Culture of Jammu & Kashmir

The valley of Kashmir is described as an emerald set in pearls, a land of lakes, clear streams, green turf, magnificent trees and mighty mountains. Although Kashmir has a rich heritage of poets, writers, philosophers, intellectuals and craftsmen but it has basically established itself as an agricultural economy.

Kashmiris form a distinct cultural and ethnic group in the administrative unit of the Himalayan state of Jammu and Kashmir, known as "Kashir" to the inhabitants of the valley and as Kashmir in the official circles. Perched securely among the Himalayas at an average height of 6,000 feet above the sea. North, east and west, range after range of mountains guard the valley from the outer world while on the south it is cut off from the Punjab by rocky barriers fifty to seventy five miles in length.

The valley is a resting place for adventurous traders from distant markets of Yarkand and Central Asia, and it furnished a base for military operations against the wild and turbulent tribes of Shinaki country to the north and north east. More to the east lie the peaceful valleys of Baltistan or Little Thibet, where gentle Baltis lead their harmless lives in a high, dry climate.

Between Kashmir and Skardu (8,873 feet), the chief stronghold of Baltis, are the great mountain plains of Devsai (13,400 feet), and to the east lies the high valley of Dras through which runs the road to Leh and Yarkand. A journey of few days from Kashmir carries one into countries of new languages, customs and religions like the primitive Shins who live along the spurs of mighty Nanga Parbat, the Mongolian Baltis of little Thibet and the simple Ladakhis, Buddhists and polyandrists.

Kashmiris inhabit contiguous areas of Jammu region in Doda, Rajouri, Poonch, Gool, Gulabgarh, Mahour, Dudu and Bani areas of Kathua district. Kashmiri language is spoken in all these areas of Jammu region and ethnically and culturally this forms a compact area along with valley of Kashmir.

Jammu & Kashmir Info

Jammu and Kashmir is the northern-most state of India, lying mostly in the Himalayan mountains. Jammu and Kashmir shares a border with Himachal Pradesh to the south, Pakistan to the west and People's Republic of China to the north and the east. Jammu and Kashmir consists of three divisions: Jammu, the Vale of Kashmir and Ladakh.

Jammu
,
the Duggar land where the past still has a living presence. A land of grand ancient temples, and beautiful palaces. All nestling in the foothills of the Himalayas. Jammu is justly famous for its temples. Infact it is known as the city of temples and the every fame of its tends to overshadow its palaces, forts, forests and powerful ziarats. Jammu attracts tens of thousands of Hindu and Muslim pilgrims every year.

The Vale of Kashmir, also known as Kashmir Valley, is famous for its beautiful mountainous landscape. Set like a jewelled crown on the map of India, Kashmir is a many faceted diamond, changing character with the seasons - always extravagantly beautiful. Three Himalayan ranges, Karakoram, Zanaskar and Pir Panjal - snow capped, majestic, frame the landscape from northwest to northeast.

Ladakh, also known as "Little Tibet", is renowned for its remote mountain beauty and Buddhist culture which was established as early as the 2nd century.Known for centuries as the 'land of passes' (La-pass;Dakh-land), Ladakh was described by Fa-hian, who travelled across its inhospitable terrain in 399 A.D., as 'The land where snow never melts and only corn ripens'.

Weather

In Jammu & Kashmir, the climatic conditions are marked with sudden change and a year can be roughly divided into six seasons of roughly 2 months each:

1. Spring-From March 15 to May 15.
2. Summer-From May 15 to July 15.
3. Rainy Season-From July 15 to Sept. 15.
4. Autumn-From Sept. 15 to Nov. 15.

Tourism

The Mughal king Jehangir, moved to such an ecstasy by the beauty of Kashmir exclaimed, "if there is a Paradise on earth, it is here, it is here, it is here". Unlike the other Himalayan regions, Kashmir has been the tourists paradise and holiday resort for a long time, probably one of the oldest on the earth.

Places of Tourist Interest

Amarnath Yatra (Natural Ice Shiva Lingam) : Situated at a height of 3,880 metres in the Himalayas, the cave enshrines a naturally formed ice-lingam, symbol of Lord Shiva, which waxes and wanes with the moon, reaching its maximum dimensions on the day of pilgrimage. This is where, Hindus believe, Lord Shiva explained the secret of salvation to his consort Parvati on a full moon night. Every year in the month of Shravana (July-August), when the moon is full, thousands of devout pilgrims gather before Amarnath Cave in the picturesque Lidder Valley in Kashmir to offer their prayers to Lord Shiva.

Gulmarg : Gulmarg's legendary beauty, prime location and proximity to Srinagar naturally make it one of the premier hill resorts in the country. Originally called 'Gaurimarg' by shepherds, its present name was given in the 16th century by Sultan Yusuf Shah, who was inspired by the sight of its grassy slopes emblazoned with wild flowers. Gulmarg was a favourite haunt of Emperor Jehangir who once collected 21 different varieties of flowers from here. Today Gulmarg is not merely a mountain resort of exceptional beauty- it also has the highest green golf course in the world, at an altitude of 2,650 m, and is the country's premier ski resort in the winter.

Pahalgam : Situated at the confluence of the streams flowing from Sheshnag Lake and the Lidder river, Pahalgam (2,130 m) was once a humble shepherd's village with breathtaking views. Now it is Kashmir's premier resort, cool even during the height of summer when the maximum temperature does not exceed 25Deg C. Around Pahalgam are many places of interest, and because the resort is set between fairly steep hills, it is worth hiring a pony rather than walking. Pony fares are posted at prominent locations. One can indulge in Horse Riding, Golf, Fishing and Trekking.

Patnitop : 112 kms from Jammu, this famous hill resort is perched on a beautiful plateau, at an altitude of 2024 metres across which the Jammu-Srinagar Highway passes. Enveloped by thickly wooded forests, Patnitop offers beautiful picnic spots, peaceful walks and breathtaking views of the of the Chenab basin. In winter, the resort is generally covered with a thick mantle of snow thus providing opportunities for various snow games including skiing. It is the best-developed tourist spot of Jammu and is second to none in its natural charm, climate, pine forests and lush green cover. The occupancy of the huts and Dak Bungalow is full in summer months.

Srinagar : Known as The Lake City, Srinagar is located in the heart of the Kashmir valley at an altitude of 1,730 m above sea level, spread on both sides of the river Jhelum. The Dal and Nagin lakes enhance its picturesque setting, while the changing play of the seasons and the salubrious climate ensures that the city is equally attractive to visitors around the year.

Sonamarg : The drive to Sonamarg is through the Sindh Valley which presents yet another spectacular facet of countryside in Kashmir. Situated at an altitude of 2730 m, Sonamarg ('The meadow of gold') has, as its backdrop, snowy mountains against a cerulean sky. The Sindh River that meanders through the valley abounds with Trout and Mahaseer. Ponies can be hired for the trip up to Thajiwas glacier, which is a major local attraction during the summer months.
Sonamarg is the base of a major trek that passes along several mountain lakes -Vishansar, Kishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and Gangabal. Sonamarg is also the take off station for the drive to Ladakh across the Zojila, a major pass in the Great Himalayan Range, through which the Srinagar-Leh Road passes.

When to Go

The best period to visit Jammu & Kashmir varies depending on the region as follows: Jammu - October To February, Kashmir - May To October & November To February, Ladakh - Mid June To September.
Interesting Fact

During colonial times, the laws of Jammu & Kashmir State did not allow for acqusition of immovable property by non-state subjects. To overcome this hurdle, house boats [which move] were devised to allow Europeans to acquire residential premiseses without breaking the law. 3. On 1st August, 1992, two British girls (sisters in relation) namely MS. Stevenson Jenet and Stevenson Joane bearing passport numbers 731038/92 Tv. 324663/92 and 1630668, Tv. 32463/92 respectively went on a Shikara Tour through river Jehlum which passes through the main city. These ladies had arrived at srinagar on 31-7-92. They left in the morning, along with two boatman and a guide. On reaching near Zainakadal bridge located in downtown city, the forces stopped them and took them in a houseboat along with the two sikara drivers and guide. The forces had in a routine matter cordoned off the area under the pretext of search operations. As reported the forces asked them to lie down as the militants were just to attack on them. The forces took the two sikara drivers and guide to some unknown place. When the two sister's asked the forces to leave them as they were tourists, nobody would listen . Then the forces attempted to rape them but as per the ladies, they managed to escape when they jumped into the sikara which was nearby . The people came for their rescue and a pressman namely Qaiser Mirza also interviewed them. When the news came to public and the pressman in an interview on Voice of America heard the news, the government came with a handout that no molestation of these two young ladies has taken place and it was reported in the press that in the army handout the ladies had manipulated the story at the behest of militants in order to defame the forces. In this connection an F.I.R No. 168/92 U/S 376/511 and 354 stands registered in P/S M.R.Gunj, which is pending investigation. In our previous report one lady journalist was raped by the National security Guard Personnel and a final charge sheet had been presented against those culprits as reported. The Government authorities said that one person namely Mohd. Ayub Badyari who was the guide in the sikara, was declared as a Pakistan Trained Militant. The government has everything in their own hands in order to declare a person as a militant or an innocent but after their goal is over. A person after arrest is released half-dead due to the third degree torture and that released person may or may not recover is a question of luck. The government played a master card in order to avoid humiliation at the hands of world community, when they declared M.Ayub. Badyari as militant and the poor , innocent person is still in custody. The two ladies cancelled their tour and left the valley next day. Now they are in their own country and truth can be ascertained form them.
  4. At Batakote, Handwara of district Kupwara, the forces had been attacked at Achkote about two kilometers away from the place of incident. The forces had suffered some causality; the forces in order to take revenge, entered the area, and dragged out the locals out of their houses. When the innocent old aged people wanted to inquire about the behavior, the forces fired on the young people. The brutal forces entered into a house and killed three women who tried to intervene after their kiths and kins were shot at by the forces. The forces molested and raped four ladies. When the people came to know about the incident, a number of human right activists and journalists reached the spot and in this connection a case was already registered in the concerned Police station. The lady victims were referred to a doctor for examination in order to ascertain the presence of semen and marks of violence on the victims. The case is under investigation and the local Police in almost in all the cases which have been registered against the forces, have not proceeded under law because of the helplessness better known to the them.
  5. On the intervening night of 10/11-10-92, the forces entered into the village of Cheek-E-Saidpora, Shopian in district Pulwama, under the pretext of search operations and asked all the male members to assemble at a particular place for identification purposes. The forces in absence of the male members forcibly raped an 11 years minor girl and five other ladies. On hue and cry of the ladies, the forces were compelled to lift the cordon and the people after entering the homes were narrated the tailful story by the female folk. When the news came known to the public, some of the human right activists went to the spot and were first stopped by the forces but later they entered the village. The victims were taken to hospital for medical check-ups; a lady doctor Safia after medical examination gave a statement that there were positive signs of rape and on the minor girl marks of violence were also seen. This examination was done in presence of Dr. Bashir Ahmad and Dr. A.N.Butt. One lady had given birth of child just some months back. One Doctor namely Dulat Hussain has been arrested by the forces and his whereabouts are not yet known. His mother has complained that he has not returned home after the arrest and all doctors have a reasonable belief that the government is deliberately causing harassment to the doctors to stop them giving honest opinion.
  6. On 24-12-92, one shepherd lady was raped by the Indian Armed Forces (BSF) and after registering a complaint in the concerned Police station at Uri of District Baramulla, some jawans of BSF reportedly kidnapped including her kids and husband.
